Experience and Achievements
Prior to joining Law Lane, Makayla was a County Court Advocate on the South Eastern circuit, where she dealt with a range of matters from mortgage possessions and applications to infant settlements.
Makayla undertook the Bar Professional Training Course at the University of the West of England, where she obtained the result Very Competent. This followed her undergraduate degree which she read at DeMontfort University and obtained a 2:1.
Makayla has international experience having worked for a brief period in China at the firm Jay and Shaw Solicitors, which specializes in legal services relating to foreign investment in China. Whilst there, Makayla assisted in a multi-million pound commercial transaction which involved drafting terms of the provisional and final company purchase contracts.
She also shadowed defence barrister James Dingemans QC of 3 Hare Court Chambers during the highly publicized Court of Appeal case concerning the European Convention of Human Rights jurisprudence in circumstances where Christian hotel owners refused a homosexual
couple admittance to a double room.
Her other achievements include fundraising for the charity Ile-Oluji National Progressive Association UK & Northern Ireland. Where she helped raise £20,000 in 2013 towards building an advanced library with computer and internet facilities in the town of Ile-Oluji, Nigeria. She was also awarded second place in the Department of Law Midlands Client Interviewing Competition 2010.
Makayla is passionate about diversity within the legal profession and social mobility. As a result of this she has been a committee member of Street Law, which is a non-profit organisation which promotes legal awareness and empowerment in the community.
Makayla’s other interests outside of law are dance. She has participated in several competitions including the Pointes West Theatre Arts competition where she obtained third place for ballet. She also enjoys learning about different cultures and is currently learning Mandarin.
Area of Expertise
Makayla works within the criminal department at Law Lane, however her practice and experience also cover immigration, civil litigation, contract, housing, landlord and tenant and personal injury. She is also an Accredited Civil and Commercial Mediator.
